Working with the museums
Working with the museums

This photo was taken earlier this month as part of LTBB’s documentation grant for 2009. We are compiling advice and experiences, pertaining to NAGPRA, from tribes across the coutry, museums, NAGRPA staff and historians. This is myself with staff from Grand Rapids Public Museum here in Michigan. I have been working with this museum for over two years on a multitude of NAGPRA related issues, the main one being their CUI collection. I am happy to say they are going forward with a disposition at the next Review Committee meeting. Consultation is always talked about and for good reason. When meaningful, open minded consultation occurs, really good things can occur. I have spoken with this museum multiple times on the phone, through email and in person. But we were always moving forward and now we are about to take a major step next month. One of the major reasons we were able to move forward was meaningful consultation. Not two parties with predetermined agendas, simply fulfilling the requirements of NAGRPA but two open parties wanting to resolve an important issue.

The entire day was spend transcribing part of the interview with the above mentioned museum. Tomorrow I head out to help with ceremonies here in Michigan. The ceremonies run a week straight. I look forward to helping, participating, visiting, learning and carrying on traditions that help make us Anishnaabek.
